Most developers have heard these buzzwords. Few actually know what they do.
If you've used Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Windsurf, or other AI coding assistants, you've probably come across terms like MCP, Sub-Agents, Rules, and Skills.
They sound similarβbut they're solving completely different problems.
Let's break them down.
:-)
π§ Think of an AI Developer as a Human Engineer
Imagine you hire a software engineer.
What would make them productive?
π They follow your company rules π They have specialized skills π₯ They ask specialists for difficult tasks π They use external tools like GitHub, Slack, Jira, databases, browsers, etc.
That's exactly what these four concepts provide.
:-)
π 1. Rules β Tell AI How to Behave
Rules are permanent instructions.
Examples:
Always write TypeScript Never use any Follow Clean Architecture Use Tailwind CSS Write unit tests Don't modify generated files
Think of Rules as your team's coding standards.
Purpose: Control AI behavior.
:-)
π 2. Skills β Teach AI How to Do Something
Skills contain reusable knowledge.
Examples:
Create a React component Review security issues Build a REST API Write Docker files Generate documentation Design database schemas
Instead of explaining every time, the AI loads the right skill when needed.
Purpose: Give AI expertise.
:-)
π₯ 3. Sub-Agents β AI Team Members
Instead of one AI doing everything, imagine multiple experts.
Purpose: Connect AI to external tools and services
Example: GitHub, Database, Slack, Jira, APIs
:-)
π How They Work Together
Imagine you ask:
"Build a secure authentication system."
The AI might:
Read your Rules (use TypeScript, Clean Architecture). Load Skills for authentication and security. Delegate tasks to Sub-Agents (backend, database, testing). Use MCP to read your repository, inspect the database, and create a pull request.
One request. Multiple systems working together.
:-)
Final Thought
These aren't competing featuresβthey're complementary.
Rules define behavior. Skills provide expertise. Sub-Agents add specialization. MCP connects AI to the outside world.
When combined, an AI coding assistant starts behaving less like a chatbot and more like a complete software engineering team.
The future of AI development isn't just a smarter modelβit's an ecosystem of Rules, Skills, Sub-Agents, and MCP working together. π
